You know, those suggestions are way to simple and is no benefit to those who bankroll the Liberal election machines.

We have yet to suffer this a while more. Hopefully The Christy Party will call a snap election and we may see relief before May 2013...

I put the following bit in the Tyee as a response to Ed Deak's challenge to Bob to speak out on the Spanish Mountain Gold proposal. Later today I spoke with Brian Groves from SMG (as a representative for Colleen, who is the registered owner of the lot at the West end of the lake, about 800 or so metres from the proposed East Waste Dump (which would be right on top of the drainage leading to the tiny creek running through the lot, and which Mr. Groves told me might be removed from the project plan). Mr. Groves is very pleasant but I am not sure he feels completely confident or comfortable with having to accommodate our interests re water quality, dust, noise, etc - just a feeling I got from him.

 From the Tyee:

Thank you, Ed

This family knows too much about the Spanish Mountain Gold proposal. Looking at their maps, we see the East Dump looming directly above and behind our lake side "retreat" and the public beach at the West end of Spanish Lake, not to mention the open pit which runs right beside Spanish Creek.

The West Dump and other parts of the proposed mine will overhang Quesnel Lake near its outlet and has many Quesnel Lake property owners worried about their futures.

This proposal has credibility gaps on such simple issues as the availability of housing in the region. Many people we know in Likely, which is hardly a hotbed of "green" activism, are not impressed with the attitudes shown by SMG people or their contractors.

As to the Cariboo Land Use Plan, I was there for the duration of the CORE process and as a member of the Negotiating Committee for the industrial coalition of resource industry, ranching, labour, and others which subsequently became the Cariboo Communities Coalition - of which, through an unlikely sequence of events, I actually served for a very short time as chair.

I can attest that the timber industry was extremely involved with both negotiating and promoting the CCLUP and in ensuring the agreement was monitored closely to ensure it would not be usurped by bureaucrats or politician. The advertising and promotion budgets went into the millions of dollars over a few years and included everything from videos to balloons to massive ad campaigns in the "Big Media".

The big promotional point we constantly stressed was how the CCLUP had been created by mutual consent amongst widely varied interests, some of whom didn't even want to speak with each other, and should as such be respected and maintained in the same spirit.

I am impressed with how far Doreen and her sister Sharon have been able to take their story, but you are correct in saying the report is not comprehensive enough and will be unlikely to result in any significant changes.
It has been my own experience to look for the ‘sinker’ line in each of these flowery things the government or Health Authorities come out with. It is the sentence that tells you, when all is said and done, it doesn’t matter what you think, they will do what they want. It is always, always, always there. In this report it comes near the end when there are 2 paragraphs that say:
"Health care providers confirmed that, if a resident with dementia who is no longer capable of giving consent, has violent behaviour that is a physical threat to the individual or to others, and the authorized decision makers refuse medication, or other appropriate treatment that is proposed to manage that behaviour, then the resident may be discharged home.
If it is not appropriate to discharge the resident home, then the practice is to send the resident to a hospital that is designated under the Mental Health Act. In these designated settings, the patient may be certified under the Mental Health Act, and involuntary treatment, including medication, may be provided without the consent of the patient or their authorized decision maker".
They could not make it any clearer. Yes, they know antipsychotics will kill your loved one, and yes they know they are not to be used for dementia patients, BUT they don’t want to spend the money to actually hire enough staff to take care of the people properly and it is easier for them to drug our family members to death.
It seems strange to me that as soon as someone enters long term care in this province, they suddenly are unmanageable, violent or a physical threat, even though most of them can’t even walk or get out of their chairs. Yes, I am painfully aware of the stages of dementia and have lived through the hell that is known as our long term care system, and I know that people with dementia can become violent. My issue is how it is dealt with. Every one of the facilities who advertise seniors long term care, is aware of the care level needed by the residents. There are strict admission requirements that must be met on the part of the resident. There are strict admission requirements that must supposedly be met by the facility. They are not allowed to admit anyone they cannot provide safe or adequate care for. Seriously? In my opinion NOBODY is given safe or adequate care in any of the facilities I have had experience with. That is not usually the fault of front line staff (rarely actually). It is directly the resutl of management, the health authorities and the government.
For these facilities to keep advertising the places as “Long Term Complex Seniors Care” and yet maintaining their steadfast refusal to hire adequate numbers of properly trained staff to care for anyone at all, seems nothing less to me than criminal fraud. Think how it would be if all of the decision makers went out to a high end restaurant and were served ‘pictures’ of food, because hey, it would be far too expensive to provide the real thing. If Seniors Care facilities are going to insist on using antipsychotic drugs as chemical restraints, knowing fully well it is going to kill the patient, then call the institutions what they really are, “The Liberal Governments Killing Fields”.
Sincerely
Jacquie Clinton

Health care issues for seniors in Quesnel, where do people go when no one is able to look after them at home and the hospital discharges them? Dunrovin is full with a waiting list for 18 months????? Why was Baker Lodge closed, why was the second floor of the hospital closed when it had people needing it?

Yes we really need a review particularly with the earthquake phenomenen in the US surrounding fracking, and the 5th Estate program about the well water air exploding with a match (in a container).
One our current problems is the buyouts and confidentiality agreemens from many affected property owners.
Thank you

I'm an enemy of the Harper governments state (of mind).

It is gratifying to see the responsible letters being put forth by yourself and others involved in both government and environmental advocacy.

What ever happened to the idea that standing up for the little guy, the environment which can't stand up for itself, or the individual citizen who can't match the resources of big oil, was a good thing?

"link it to the need to revolutionize our economic system in its entirety"

I think that revolution will happen on its own, naturally, there is no need for draconian legislation and force of law for things like cap&Trade, or the destructive REDD program, or carbon pricing or the UN as our world government. So I agree with your assessment.

Naomi Klein has just had a "conversation" with Revkin in NYT http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/07/naomi-kleins-inconvenient-climate-conclusions/
and is proving to be one of the few people who "get it".
The "economic transfer" can only happen after ; tax havens are closed ; financial transactions tax ; tax on international transport emissions (not in Kyoto).
Obama has a big chance to change things if he hangs his coat on the green vote!
The next stage is the hardest to get, emissions MUST peak at 2015 as Prof Kevin Anderson (Tyndal Centre) states here (Amazing audio/slideshow - this REALLY needs to be circulated)http://www.slideshare.net/DFID/professor-kevin-anderson-climate-change-going-beyond-dangerous.
My blog gave the "Clown of COP 17 Award" to Peter Kent, well done the Canadian Youth contingent who stood apart.
