The Cariboo has extensive range land allocated for pasture and other agricultural activities. Much of this land runs parallel to roads of which fencing does not always exist. While in the past the Government has taken responsibility for the installation and upkeep of range fencing along roads, this in no longer the case. Money has been allocated to the BC Cattlemen’s Association to repair and expand fencing across the province. My office has received safety concerns from commuters who have experienced close calls with livestock and other animals. Ranchers too have raised issues with the lack of fencing on land near roads. I will be contacting the BC Cattlemen and local Cattlemen Associations in the New Year to discuss the current fencing program and work with the provincial government on fencing strategies for the future.
